PhD Engineering Candidate
Arizona State University
Ulises (he/him/él) holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in engineering education. He is a PhD candidate in engineering education at Arizona State University. His research examines the educational experiences of students and professionals from migratory and seasonal farmworker backgrounds, with a particular focus on (1) how funds of knowledge developed through migratory life experiences and how these assets are leveraged in engineering spaces, (2) math and science attitudes that shape migratory adolescents’ engineering identity, and (3) migratory adolescents’ career values and their influence on pursuing engineering pathways. Ulises is a 2022 fellow of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program and a former fellow of the Station1 Frontiers Fellowship, the Micron Academy for Inclusive Leadership, and the HACU ¡Adelante! Leadership Institute. In 2021, he founded a scholarship to support migrant students in Eastern Oregon in pursuing higher education. As a first-generation, low-income Latino from a farm-working family, Ulises remains deeply committed to his community and to advancing educational and leadership opportunities for students from historically marginalized backgrounds.
